Exploring Rosedale and the North York Moors: Top 5 Activities and Things to Do

Whether you are nestled at Heather the Hut or just seeking a memorable adventure in and around Rosedale, this guide is your gateway to the best experiences in the heart of the North Yorks Moors. Here are Heather’s top 5 suggestions that showcase the best of her enchanting surroundings.

1. Discovering Rosedale Abbey's historic charm

Just a short, 45 minute walk from Heather finds you in the historic village of Rosedale Abbey, the centre of this captivating dale that 300 people call home.

Despite its name, Rosedale Abbey has never had an abbey. Instead, it was the site of a Cistercian monastery, the remains of which lie in the 19th century village church at the centre of this thriving rural community.

With a village shop, café, glass-blowing workshop and two pubs, nestling amongst attractive, stone-built cottages, there is plenty of opportunity to while away a few hours and appreciate the old world charm of this quintessential moorland village.

2. Walking adventures in the North York Moors

For walking enthusiasts staying at Heather the Hut, the surrounding North York Moors offer a variety of routes to suit every level. Whether that is a short walk down into the village or a half-day walk along Rosedale’s (mainly flat) former Iron Age railway line discovering the history of the area, the countryside offers breath-taking scenery at every turn.

3. Cycling the Moors: A Biker's Paradise

If cycling is more your thing, the network of virtually traffic-free country lanes bordered by dry-stone walls, typical of the area, are a biker’s paradise. Much like the walkers, bikers are treated to a range of rides for all enthusiasts from the door, including the notorious Chimney Bank (more of which, later). So, saddle up and discover the routes that set the scene for the inaugural Tour de Yorkshire in 2015

4. Visiting Rosedale Chimney Bank

Rosedale Chimney Bank is named after a 100-foot high chimney that supported an ironstone mine and was demolished in 1972. It’s home to one of the steepest stretches of tarmac in the UK and, whilst scaling it by car, on two wheels or on foot may strike fear into the hearts of locals and visitors alike, the views from the top are unparalleled. Wide open moorland vistas on one side and a view right along the valley of Rosedale meet the eyes of all those brave enough to climb to the top.

Those with a more hearty appetite may wish to indulge in a ‘Desperate Dan’ steak pie with all the trimmings at the nearby Coach House Inn, which also serves a range of real ales and soft drinks.

Then, for those that seek the warm, welcoming ambience of a traditional Yorkshire country pub as reward at the end of a brief, uphill battle, there is the White Horse Farm Inn. An ideal venue for pub grub beside a log fire or, when whether permits, outside with commanding views towards Heather the Hut.
