Heather the Hut

Heather by train? Well...

Heather the Hut is often asked, ‘Is she accesible by train?’ The answer is ‘yes she is’. Well, almost… Despite her situation in Splendid Seclusion on the outskirts of the impossibly pretty village of Rosedale Abbey in the North York Moors, Heather may be reached by guests who don’t have a car.

By far the most scenic way to start your stay is to catch a train on the delightfully quaint Esk Valley Railway. This stretch of the national network links the industrial Teesside town of Middlesbrough with the North Yorkshire coastal resort of Whitby.

Getting to Heather by train is beautiful least as far as Egton

Described as one of the most scenic train journeys in the UK, the full 90-minute / 35 mile journey follows the River Esk for much of its eastern half through bucolic countryside connecting 17 rural stations. This includes Grosmont, where travellers may join the privately-run North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which runs between Pickering and Whitby making the journey to Heather by train one you will definitely remember!

Also, Danby, home to the North York Moors National Park Centre, a hub for visitors with information on the flora, fauna and way of life of this wonderful area and Glaisdale, with its tea garden, village shop and historic ‘Beggar’s Bridge’.

Heather’s visitors alight at Egton station, approximately three quarters of the way into the journey and are treated to yet another example of idyllic rural life, far removed from the fast pace of modern society.

Famed for its annual gooseberry show, the oldest surviving of its kind and home to the most recent prize-winning example of almost 50 grams, Egton and its neighbour Egton Bridge have plenty to offer the visitor.

From a pint in the Postgate Inn or the Horseshoe Hotel (or both!) to relaxing by the stepping stones to the soothing sounds of the River Esk, the choice is yours.
